If you have the counter part figured out the rest is easy.

Just stick the part that displays the counter on screen in 2 keyframes.
and create a loop.

If you want it displaying through out the whole move stick the 2 KeyFrames
into an MC and put the MC on it's own time line with enough frames (not
Keyframes)
to cover the length of the movie.

As long as the 2 Keyframes loop, they continue to make calls to the DB and
display
the most current variable. So withing seconds of someone hitting the page
the counter
updates your screen.
