maybe so, but both were set to the same, and there was no visible
difference. yet if I dropped the PS slider down to try any match the size,
the quality was noticeable then. I just had better results with fireworks
for that image. I still haven't had a chance to compare the two on another
image.
all in all I ended up with a better looking, but smaller image with
fireworks -irregardless of settings.

the difference is that percentage sliders for jpeg compression are pretty
much completely arbitrary. 60% in fireworks might be closer to 30% in
imageready. photoshops native .jpg /.gif export facilities are pretty
crappy, but using "save for web" (5.5 +) you should get similar quality/size
results to fireworks. for imageready/ps5.5, you can really pull down the jpg
quality slider. 30% is fine for many photographs.
