When compressing (reducing file size) audio for use on the Web (or in
Flash) there are often problems. Flash and other programs can reduce
audio file size in two ways. One is by reducing the Sample Rate (Rate:)
and the other reducing the Bit Depth (Compression:). Both of these
reduce the amount of detail used to store an audio file. Though they
modify the signal in different ways the most noticeable effect of both
is usually the loss of high frequencies. This loss of high frequencies
is often perceived to be a speed change (pitch).
The key to making digital audio files that are small is to create or
modify the audio composition to rely on mid frequencies instead of
higher frequencies.
Better results are usually accomplished when the sample rate is reduced
by an even multiples (Reduce 44K to 11K for example).
Flash's default compression is 11K and 4 bit. If the original file is of
high quality you will get better audio results with the use of 22K or
44K and no Bit Compression but of course the file size will be larger.
Use of stereo always doubles file size and is almost always a luxury
that must be sacrificed for general Web use.
Testing the different audio settings is the only sure way to know how a
particular piece will sound at various Flash Sample Rate/Compression
settings. Experiment and test.
