Very nice and innovative design.

http://www.spyplane.com uses the JavaScript: protocol and correctly

sends MSIE 3 users to a Gif page instead of allowing them to go to a

non-functional page. Use of the JavaScript: allows smooth transistions

between pages via JavaScript but this design decision prevents 15% (MSIE

3) of potential visitors from seeing the Flash content.

Also you are required to have JavaScript and accept a cookie to go to

the Flash version.


Version 3 browsers still make up about 30% - 33% of the Web surfers.

Off the Web the numbers are even higher.

Many people just can't afford the hard disk space and/or the performance

hit they would take when upgrading to version 4 browsers. It is likely

that this number will hold until the first of the year. 


It won't be until March or April that we will be able to gauge if there

is any major long term browser upgrade to versions 4+. January and

February will have a temporary surge in surfers with version 4+ browsers

(esp. MSIE) as people try out their new Christmas gifts (computers and

computer modums etc.) on the Web. I expect we will be around 25% in

version 3 browsers in 6 months.
