Hi Al,
If you've done some work you can show, _that's_ your demo as far as I'm
concerned. The client should have a fair chance to assess your skills
before contracting with you. And you should be professional and produce
work of the same quality as that which you showed the client. And then the
client should pay you for all the work you did for the client.
To use an analogy that I think fits well: In the ad industry, agencies
routinely have a concept made into a demo so they can get a better feel if
it will work, or so they can show it to their client. But they always pay
the employee or contractor who makes the demo. Part of the business is
that you don't keep everything you produce. So throwing stuff away is part
of making a profit. And the profit should be shared with everyone who
worked for it.
There's nothing wrong with making a demo. But it shouldn't be free.
