I'm generally in agreement with Jim and David on this issue. I do think however that getting a contract sometimes takes time and costs you money . . . you take a potential clients to lunch, don't you? It's just the cost of doing business.... but there has to be limits. There are clients out there that will take advantage of you - the real trick is recognizing "them" before they "take you". Sometimes the only way to get a client  to open the checkbook is to schmooze em and do a few prototypes... just enough and not to far, again, just the cost of doing biz. Don't get me wrong... this is the exception and not the rule.

After reading Bill W. and Noam's request I sent a reply email with my "take on it"...and they in turn replied to me.

(my email to Bill W and Noam)
At the risk of pointing out the obvious... usually only the inexperienced will "bite" on these types of
requests. So, as far as I can tell, what this really comes down to is that your trying to impress your high level
contacts, in hopes of persuading them to see the value of the web by using inexperienced designers.
Hmmmmm, interesting approach.  I know you've make it very clear that there is no money in it, but it
still reminds me of something I learned when I first got into this business...
"Never buy your way into a crap shoot"

and in response, this is their repy....

Jeff,
You're entitled to your opinion, as uninformed as it may be.  So when I'm
benefiting from this "crap shoot", I'll be sure to drop you a line.  Young
people aren't necessarily inexperienced.  I've gotten some design work that's
pretty top notch from people who aren't as closed minded as you.   In the
future, if you're not interested in a project you don't consider valid, don't
waste your time writing to someone to let them know how smart you are.  You're
not that smart.

Sounds kinda touchy to me... "You just wait until I get famous smart guy....you'll never work in this town again"
