John,

I haven't had much time to play with it either, but I believe that by

layering gradients, that fade to transparent, and making the fill areas

large enough so that there is at least some ground covered by pure

transparent, layers of colour could seamlessly blend into each other,

creating very much the same effect as the gradient mesh tool in Illustrator

8. However it would be much more time comsuming, but it can be done with

some really soft and realistic effects.
