article at About.com about the issue......following is an excerpt.
According to Roblimo, the bottom line according to Unisys is:
"...if the GIFs on your Web site were created with software that is licensed
by Unisys, you are fine. Nobody at Unisys is going to try to get $5000 or
even $0.50 out of you. Period."
Unisys says that most of the major graphic software vendors (e.g. Adobe,
Corel, JASC, Macromedia, Microsoft, AOL/Netscape, et al) have licenses, so
you can use those products to create your GIFs and use the GIFs with
impunity.
