As stated, I agree, as long as one has his licecened software. I
think Cheri's post cleared this up, with factual info for which I am
grateful and relieved!
You don't need to convince me-it's unisys that want their coffers
filled.
But that only provides impetus to switch to png, possibly better
anyhow. So unisys maybe show themselves in the foot, here.
There are plenty of web designers, with one eye open on this, and
using all the jpeg's they can as well as png.
Speaking of png, there is now an animated version (mng) -like
animated gif's. Trouble is no browser support. While not once in
blue moon would anyone get a "bill" over this, it is an issue that
has come up in years past (a couple years ago) and again now.
Yep, we are as snug as a bug in a rug. As long as we don't get
stepped on. BTW I am not affiliated with any company-pro or con
on this. Again, Cheri's post clears this up Much appreciated. AL

CRAP MAN !!!

Thats like me trying to patent French Fries and then make everyone who sells or
eats them pay royalties.
I am sure gifs would belong to the public domain ...

Next someone is gonna patent URL's - and if you hAve a URL you pay
...ridiculous......

the story behind 'gifs and Unisys's algorithm and the law, and the
possibility of being in litigation! AL Lyman

Unisys is now charging ANYBODY a royalty if they are using ANY
gif's on
>their web site. See, Unysis now has the patent for that format and
are
>planning to enforce the patent. So if your web site has ANY gif's,
and they
>know about it, you will get a bill for $5,000.00 for the rights to use
>it!!!!
