if you know that your presentation will always be on a pc, director is 

affordable and the learning curve for fancy slide shows is relatively easy.

it starts getting complicated (& pricey) when you are authoring

self-launching, cross platform, accessing other applications etc. 


and its big fun. almost as much fun as flash 4
