Justin,

I have an idea...

I think you can make the concept work by using a text narrative or another method that sets up your scenario. You can even keep with the
sci-fi theme by having typed text pop across the screen in on OCR type font. You can even reinforce the typed effect with sound effects.

Lots of movies and TV shows use this method to establish a scenario, it may help establish your story line.
