As John alluded, the Opera browsers do not seem to offer anything similar
to the Netscape LiveConnect mechanism, or Microsoft's ActiveScripting
mechanism. This can make it hard for their JavaScript interpreter to talk
with objects in the page.
(Rephrased, it seems as if the current Opera builds still do not support
FSCommand or JavaScript "play/pause/rewind" of Flash.)
Reminder: Not all browsers offer JavaScript detection of plugins, or
JavaScript communication with plugins.
The Netscape 3+ browsers can generally do both, on Java-enabled PowerMac
or Win32 boxes.
The Microsoft 3+ browsers for Win95+ can tell some-but-not-all ActiveX
Controls through VBScript, and can adress ActiveX Controls through
JavaScript or VBScript, and can catch ActiveX messages with VBScript.
IE/Mac can't do either. Rarer browsers rarely do either.
