If I were someone with pull at Macromedia, I myself would likely opt to not
include MIDI files as a sound source for a couple of reasons:
1) I only helps you with the music end of the sound design;
2) Using audio files means your sound design will be heard the way you
intended, and not have to worry about things like poor sound card MIDI
banks.
This will likely always mean bigger files - even with the mp3 compression,
which is nothing to sneeze at - but at least your work will be
consistent-looking and -sounding (given the vagaries of browser
functionality).
I myself am into MIDI, and I love it to death. But I do know that my MIDI
work will not sound the same on everyone's equipment, which can be a
problem. Call it a decision to make software geared toward making you put
together a professional and consistent product.
