It sounds like you're successfully isolating this abnormal performance to
invoking certain fonts, then.
For "What are popular ways to get fonts to crash the system?" then methods
include but are not limited to: corrupt font; bad version of Adobe Type
Manager; too many fonts installed; overall system fragility.
I don't know whether any of these are *the* cause there, but they're the
most common ways we see online to achieve similar symptoms, if that context
is of help.
