Don't get your katooties to excited though. Importing an already made .swf
is most likely not going to happen. By default, most published Flash files
are protected from import. Even still, if it wasn't protected from import
and you imported it into Flash, you would have zero editing capabilities.
The .swf contains only the file without the necessaary components that allow
for editing.

Changing a .swf file without the source (.fla) is impossible as far as know.
There are some tools that allow you to crack open even .swf, but the most
you will extract are some images and maybe sound.

That would be the equivalent of banging your head against a concrete wall
several times trying to cure a headache.

At best it would probably require *more* work than recreating the file from
scratch. swf's are not like graphic images that are there for the taking and
easily edited. It is one of the many values of .swf's

thought the *.fla format is proprietary to Macromedia -- in other
words, other companies can make products which can create or export as
*.swf, but only Macromedia Flash can create, open, use *.fla files.

Allright... Want I want to do is edit the .swf then, methinks.

trying to prepare vector artwork for use in the Macromedia Flash 5
authoring
environment, then any tool that writes a valid SWF can have its art
imported to F5. Or are you trying to achieve something different...?

I think what I need to do, then, is just edit the .swf. I've got a
small .swf file I'm trying to get into and change up a bit, but I
didn't know of any software that would let me do it free. If Flash is
free for 30 days, though, I can probably work with that.
