Essentially it is nothing more than a glorified typing class. Using the

calculator as an example, they show how to code the final part but don't

walk through why they created the variables and where they are.


For years, I have been consistently complaining that Flash AS books

assume the reader is a a code warrior. This is a huge mistake. If only

someone would take a page from Roberts (Director Demystified) and

Rosenzweig (Director 8, Special Edition) on the Director side of the

fence. These two authors don't make that assumption and walk the user

through the language from very simple to extremely complex. They also

clearly explain the code and the concepts behind the code. They also

fill their work with code you can use because they focus on code

technique, not flash. Magic focusses on the flash and not the code

technique.


The strength of Magic is that it uses real world examples of common

every day techniques. Having taught Lingo and AS I find the best way of

presenting it is in the "context of what you do".Magic sorta does that

but it missed becoming a huge resource because the the authors didn't go

the "extra mile" and clearly lay out every line of code and its purpose.

If you do the calculator in Magic you will encounter calls to variables

that are already in place. If you have an error, you will have to ask,

"Where did that come from?". If you have to do that with a book, then it

has truly missed the mark.
