yes, I do this all the time on my Powerbook [500mhz Pismo 394MbRam] .
Plugging in an external monitor enables a number of options in the
monitors control panel, allowing one to set the display to mirroring
for presentations and allowing one to set the relative placement of
monitors in normal mode. It's really sweet.
