If this came from Illustrator, then it doesn't have a way to preserve
symbols like the FreeHand->Flash export does, so I assume you're bringing
these in as separated shapes.
In that example it looks like the Illustrator art has multiple shapes
layered upon each other. One way to get "i convert to symbol and it
disappears" is if you're selecting a shape towards the back and convert it
to a symbol... this new object will then appear in front of others.
Could this be similar to what you're seeing there...? If you instead select
the multiple shapes that make the object and convert them all to a single
symbol, then do you see what you expect...?
(If there are actually multiple shapes layered upon each other, then it
might be good to see whether you can optimize these curves further in
Flash... a print application wouldn't necessarily care about extra shapes,
but this is a big concern when we're delivering files over the web.)
