If I understand you correctly...Yes. take your line, or stroke and /-->
Modify, convert lines to fills. Now select a gradient with the paint bucket
and fill your shape. Your can adjust the fill with the paint bucket
modifiers like any other fill.
Beware!: it will no longer be a stroke/line. You will lose the properties
of lines and it will now behave like a shape, it can be modified but not like
a line can.
