Hey Eric,

What you do is you make a box or circle with a radial gradient in it, and
then you take your text, the size you want it in your document and place it
on top of the gradient...then select both the text and the box or circle and
hit command-7 (which should be 'create mask') and it should work...but you
have to make sure that the text is on top of the box or circle and not
bellow. Then after you have made the mask you can adjust the size or
gradient of the circle to get it how you would like.

(On a more personal tip...if you want a depression look, you should go into
Photoshop...if you have 5 or above and use the emboss layer effect. That
might give you more of what you are looking for.)
