Subject: Re: FLASH: Dreamweaver vs. HTML in Notepad

Right on, Bill. You've described the process I've seen on most high-end web
teams perfectly.

<rant>

I've been in this industry about 3 years and for the last year and half
working as a multimedia developer with the web team at U S WEST. You wanna
talk high-traffic? uswest.com fits the bill. Most of the HTML
professionals on our team use Dreamweaver (or some other such object editor)
to lay out tables, and that's about it. Most pros I've seen use text
editors such as BBEdit for their heavy work (Homesite also has a few
adherents). And I would argue they're just as fast with text editors as
with their chosen WYSIWYGs.

Someone who doesn't understand HTML would be weeded out of our group in a
week, no matter how well they know Dreamwhatever. What value would they have
in terms of designing site strategy? How would they keep track of
technological changes (yes, BEFORE the WYSIWYGs incorporate them)? And what
the heck would they do when it comes time to troubleshoot a site? Call
Macromedia?

The question posed by this thread is, IMO, akin to asking: who would you
rather have remove your tonsils, a knife expert or someone who's studied
medicine? I'm sure the knife expert could get it done, but,...Yikes!

I'll say it bluntly: without understanding HTML, your value as a web
professional is extremely limited. It's an ABC skill, a sine qua non. And
jeez folks, it's easy! Dang, what a question....

The tools build upon your knowledge; they can't supplant it.

Okay, I'm done.
