It's serious if other applications change. I do know that there were some
Win98 installations that did not have updated Microsoft components and
which did not run the application, and when the early OS was updated to
Microsoft's current Win98 recommendation, then things were normal again.
This may be related to what you're seeing, may not -- it's possible that
those particular MS apps used particular system components which did not
like being updated. I know this is a hassle, but if you check the apps and
components against Microsoft's current recommendations for Win98, then do
you see the results that other people are getting...?
(It may be something entirely different too... running a system diagnostic
utility may be fruitful too.)
Sorry I don't have a firm match for the symptom, but does the above
near-match help point the way at all...?
