Subject: FLASH: Flash 5 retrocompatibility?
From: John King
Date: Thu, 14 Sep 2000 19:45:47 +0100

There are a lot of Flash 5 files showing up on the flash sites.

With flash5 everything's fine but if you try to view these with only the
flash4 player you get nothing. That's fine if your intent is to use the
FLA provided to demonstrate Flash 5 authoring or if the movie uses some
capability not found in flash 4.

What I want to know is what is the new thing that's keeping flash5
content from being viewable with flash4player (I know what some are for
the previous versions). Are the movies really doing something that you
can't do in flash4? What would a flash5 sniffer do? It's my
understanding that flash4 rewrites the actionscript if you open a flash5
fla in flash4, so why can't the 4 player play 5?

(Please, let's not replay the "I don't care if they can't see my content
if they're too lazy to get off their ass and get the new player"
diatribe)

Thanks
