Wait, I think that is wrong, in the library (ctrl-l) the icons do not
represent instances, they are symbols there, references, it doesn't become
an instance until it is actually put on the stage.
Dana, when you make a new symbol (movie clip) on the drawing area(stage)
that is an instance, it also makes a copy of that in your library that you
can drag out, and use as many times you want, and as you drag out another
and another, each of those become New instances. if you double click on any
ONE instance on the stage you will get a dialog box, with the tabs (I am
sure you have seen it) and providing that the symbol is a Movie clip you
will have an option to name the instance, which will allow you to later
target that instance by name..
I don't know if I am making since, but think of it along the lines of a
library of books, you have the card catalog which shows you a list of all
the books, then you have the actual books on the shelf... there may be more
then one copy of the book, and they all have the same title, but each may
have its own little number on it saying which one of the (however many)
copies the library has that particular one is. i.e. an instance of the
book... follow? (hell I am not sure if I do :oP)
good luck :o)

Go to >window>library [NOT libraries on the main interface menu]. That will
give you a list of all your "instances", labelled as icons acording to their
type.
HTH, Dana.
