Thanks Charlie, that's really useful.

The client is supplying the email list but I'll have a word as I don't know where they're getting it from and your point about bought-lists is a matter for concern as it sounds dangerously close to spamming.

As for social sites were approaching this from a point of presence and advertising angle rather than grassroots engagement.  We're looking at Renren & Weibo for now, just to test the waters.
