Hi All, In response to John B and http://bluedotworld.com I wanted to give you a little more information that might interest you. I know the guys over at Gamaroff Digital (www.gamaroff.co.uk) who actually built bluedotworld and this discussion I guess fuels the Gamification vs Gaming discussion. I actually think this is a great example of how Gamification has real world uses! For those who would like to know how it works. Basically, Blue Dot aims to make charitable actions more appealing to a younger generation and rewards them for it. As far as I can see it is a totally new concept, by which a user is rewarded for sharing content from certain charities and this is done by them performing a "scan" of their facebook profile to pick up on keywords. These actions and donations are then stored and the user is rewarded "dots" which can be redeemed against offers. This shows that Gamification can actually reach beyond the typical "badging" and "ribbon" ideas, where badges etc have little long term reward, whereas you collect more dots and redeem them. I think this is a great example of how brands can reward users for simple social interactions and reward them with deals and offers in the real world. Hope this helps to give more information and insight into Gamification and how it can be used in the real world to offer real value to consumers. If you would like me to put you in touch with the guys at Gamaroff please contact me off list. In a shameless attempt to sneak a plug in to a busy thread, would any of you like tickets for the England-Sweden game in a couple of weeks? You can win some in a 'Be the commentator' competition we've just launched on the FA's Facebook Page. Use your webcam, record your commentary and you're done! http://www.facebook.com/EnglandTeam (it's the 'Be the commentator' link). Seriously though, it's a nifty technology, it just takes a feed from any webcam in to any web page/application. Drop me a line if you've got a use for it! jd PS - also any bloggers out there? If you'd like to cover this reasonably novel take on UGC I know the FA will be happy to have a chat. -----Original Message----- From: uk-netmarketing at lists.chinwag.com [mailto:uk-netmarketing at lists.chinwag.com] On Behalf Of Chris Kempt Sent: 02 November 2011 5:04 PM To: John Duffy Subject: RE: [uk-netmarketing] The Gurus of Gamification... :O) Awesome JD. I smiled earlier as I caught a piece on the radio about the Incas. Warriors had to prove themselves in battle by (amongst other things) capturing people for human sacrifice. They were rewarded with visible tokens for the number of people captured - or badges, as Foursquare would call them. And the thing that really made me smile. There were only rewarded up to a certain point for each type of captive, because the Incas recognised that some enemies were 'harder' than others. So, a bonus system rewarding new behaviours too! Not so sure there are too many Incas around just now to act as gurus, but there's the earliest form of gamification I've come across ... jd -----Original Message----- From: uk-netmarketing at lists.chinwag.com [mailto:uk-netmarketing at lists.chinwag.com] On Behalf Of John Braithwaite Sent: 27 October 2011 12:40 PM To: John Duffy Subject: Re: [uk-netmarketing] The Gurus of Gamification... I think there has to be a blending of the two: 1. It is true that those at the gaming end can be blinded to 'how to make it pay' challenge, however 2. Those from the loyalty backgrounds need to understand the different between 'fun' and pavlov's dog Although, some would argue (reasonably) that actually players of games like Farmville aren't, in fact, having fun but just going through the motions of trying to reach the unattainable. I would say - loyalty needs reinventing and to be more fun. By the way, got this on my radar yesterday, http://bluedotworld.com/ - needs to be communicated more clearly, but interesting blending of loyalty / giving / social / gamification. Gamification is already heavily used by brands for enticing users to keep going back to their product or service, fill in a survey and in general, to engage with their brand. People are just referring to it now because it's been given a 'name'. It's incredibly interesting however, and incredibly useful for encouraging users to essentially do what you want them to online, especially when teamed up with great user experience flows. > Someone who I've found influential is Tom Chatfield - he looks at the mechanics of gaming and the psychology that comes with it. > Ciao for now, Elizawww.flydigital.co.uk > > >> From: glen at glencollins.com >> To: eliza_flynn at hotmail.com >> Subject: RE: [uk-netmarketing] The Gurus of Gamification... >> Date: Thu, 27 Oct 2011 11:15:20 +0100 >> >> >> My first filter when talking to people about gamification is this; If they >> talk about "We create flash games" then I tend to switch off as it >> feels like they're just trying to jump on the gamification bandwagon >> >> For me, and I may be in the minority, gamification 'gurus' are more likely >> to come from a loyalty scheme background than a making pretty games >> background as its this thinking that is key to gamification, not the ability >> to build a lovely platform game and then reskin it 27 times for >> numerous different clients. >> >> Don't get me wrong, games have their place, but if I'm going to give >> my cash >> to a gamification guru, they'd better have a solid platform of understanding >> in loyalty, human psychology and consumer dynamics first and >> foremost.
