I have used BuddyPress and while it's OK for smaller niche communities, I would not (yet) recommend it for a large-scale implementation. It is not mature enough and it does take a fair amount of customisation, plugins galore and/or and compromise to get it to behave the way you want - depending on what you want, of course! I concur that you should start with a set of must-haves, nice-to-haves and maybe-useful-in-futures from a functionality and communication perspective, and use that as the basis of evaluating any platform. Choosing the platform first to me is like picking up the phone and saying 'I need to make a phone call' but without first determining who you'll be speaking to, what the call will be about - and whether it's actually better to phone them instead of texting or emailing.
