IMO its still possible to use this or another system to retro fit your existing website to make it mobile;

considerations are

- is all the content is necessary ?

- what is the purpose of the mobile site? alternate version or cut down info only version

If using a CMS, eg wordpress, you'll find heaps of mobile themes out there (skeleton comes as a WP theme )

Umbraco etc will allow you to install alternate stylesheets, a good CMS will allow you to display mobile only content/ website only content.

CSS is a great thing when you have some decent HTML in front of it, so using display:hidden; on elements you dont want on your mobile version and adding width:100%; to your images can make a world of difference.

I like this tutorial... its a good place to start...

Because most of my clients already have main sites and want just a site over the top. Of course you could do every one from scratch and bespoke, which will, perhaps, work best for the larger clients, but the smaller ones will just want plug and play.

It's all very well saying 'hey, let's do this thing bottom up', but most of them will balk at a four-figure bill - so the question is whether there's a faster way for the smaller client.

However, at the same time, appreciate your comments.

I can see there's a number of mobile website solutions in circulation... some of which are more, ahem, dubious than others. Like the ones, for example, who deliver you a mobile site which is not connected to your main website (so, how DO your normal website visitors see it, then!)
