Wow. Thank you everyone for all the responses, the insight, the kind words and the advice. First, the scores on the doors: Stick with email: 17 people Switch to Linkedin: 1 person Switch to Facebook: 1 person It looks like the UKNM crowd (and I think me, too) prefer the old school email approach. I've added some comments to various people below... @John Horsley - thanks for the insight on the Linkedin API, I had a look through the terms, but the feedback from your experience is much appreciated. When I first posted I hadn't seen the T&C stating that content stored on Linkedin couldn't be cached. So they own all the conversations, not the group. Killed it for me. @Angus Phillipson/@John Duffy - point about the threaded forum/archive duly noted, and has been for ages, finding the time/tech to achieve this has proved much harder than I thought. Ironically, the tech in this space really hasn't moved and the rise of social media seems to have slowed it even more, despite most of us spending plenty of time in our inboxes. @Ben Thompson - we wouldn't want to be held responsible for breaking your social media fast, as good a reason as any for not switching away from an email list. @Barry Furby - good point about Linkedin being synonymous (in the minds of employers at least) with job hunting and the perception of how clicking round, even a group, might be perceived in an office. And finally two, very kind, very humbling quotes, which if you don't mind me adding to the page on the website, I'd love to add them: @John Braithwaite - "Anyway, all the best to all for 2012. I will be offline as my fourth boy is due Tuesday ... life moves on fast: when I joined I wasn't a father..." - congratulations! @Suzy Turnbull - "I have interacted/contributed to Chinwag more than any other group in my last 6 years in Digital." - so, so kind od you. And a massive thank you to everyone who has and continues to contribute frequently, infrequently, by reading, listening and being part of our little gang. Can you believe UKNM has just turned 16! So, next steps? Sticking with the email list format and tidying up the Mailman setup (John/Nabil - thanks for the notes about messages and filtering, I'll check those out). Now that we're using Mailman I hope it's going to be easier to import the old archives from 2001-2011 and add them to the website. Now to tackle the various technical challenges that involves. Thanks again for all your support.
