One solution is to get a canadian person or entity you trust implicitly to buy and hold the domain for you. As long as you have a contract that they 'hold it to your order' then they can own it and point it to your domain. A law firm or notary can do it for you. The value of all these domains may be questionable - see the number of .co.uk or even .com domains for well known brands that are held by a squatter and are just a parked domain. I always trip over these when looking for the real brand but its usually getting the .com and .co.uk the other way around. If you branding does not use .eu, .net or .info etc then it may not have much worth. Why would you search .info for a UK company if it isn't part of the branding? You can sue anyone trying to impersonate your company so most of these domains end up being held as parked domains earning a pittance for the owner. If you have the trademark for radarmusic that should stop someone creating radarmusic.eu and setting up a business in the categories you have trademarked - so they would have to do something else with it. Still if its only £300 then it may be worth the investment. Years ago when I worked at a telco we kept getting sent messages from a domain registrar that 'someone was trying to register a domain similar to yours'. We bought the first couple but then realised it was a waste of time as the number of variants was huge. For example, assume the company was Acmetelcoms we were being sent the opportunity to buy 'acme-telecoms', 'acme-telecomms', 'acmetelecommunications' 'acmetel' 'acme-teleco' etc etc. You may find that some domains make more sense for the business - 'tv' might be a good investment for your business and maybe '.net'. ________________________________ From: Caroline Bottomley <caroline at radarmusicvideos.com> To: uk-netmarketing <uk-netmarketing at mm.chinwag.com> Sent: Monday, 12 August 2013, 17:40 Subject: [uk-netmarketing] Advice about domains? Hi UK Net Marketers who are not on holiday, We've been advised to purchase a bunch of domain names for security's sake, ie .biz, .org, .info, .tv, .eu, .co.uk In order to improve our international security and appeal, we've also been advised to buy .asia, .au and .ca The first set will cost us about £300 for 5 years via GoDaddy. I don't know what the second set will cost us, but it will require me to lie and say I'm a Canadian citizen or live in Asia etc etc. How important is domain name purchase for security's sake? It feels a lot like buying insurance / gambling, but I'm finding it very difficult to assess risk. Plus I'm not keen on lying. Have you ever head horror stories?
