Hey John, Is this for an existing event with history / pedigree? If so, the audience may be hesitant and even unwilling to be directed to use another site when they are probably already hooked into what could be considered stable environments (and their own environments). Your client could be trying to re-educate an audience that has no desire to be in a new home/s, and the time it would take to achieve this may not be warranted for a two day event. If your client has a blog, media centre etc., this could be an arena to host all of the content; summarise, report etc., working alongside with other environments so the conversations are not fragmented and they have a voice. I did see that an agency created a service that you describe, but can't remember what is was called (sorry). Perhaps the folk at http://www.beyondsport.org or here might be able to remember?
