[uk-netmarketing] Answer me this

hi, Robin,

I wrote an odd little post on doing a very small part of this with google
analytics: http://p.barker.dj/autobots . There's a great comment from Phil
Pearce in the comments there that's worth a look. If you wanted a one-off
audit you could probably drop him a note and see if he'd do it using your
raw server logs or something.

I *think* that ABC audits will exclude bots. (if I remember right they use
a combination of IP address and user agent string to determine actual # of
users).
I *think* Telemetry (similar name to admetry, but I don't think related)
offer auditing if you spend lots & lots on media.

And if you use Google Analytics, here's a very simple little process for
figuring out some of your bot traffic (most will automatically be excluded
from google analytics, as most bots do not fire javascript, for the ones
that do, this often helps isolate them):

   1. Go to your geographical reports (by location).
   2. Extend the date range across a period of a few months.
   3. Switch to the 'view table by city' mode.
   4. Look for anomalies in bounce rate.
   5. Look for anomalies in cities/towns with *lots* of traffic where there
shouldn't be. (for example, I think siteconfidence often trigger lots of
fake traffic from southsea & somewhere just outside manchester).
   6. Look for anomalies in 'new visitor percentage' numbers.
   7. After having done that, apply an advanced segment so that you are
only viewing 'direct' visits to the site.
   8. Again, go through bounce rate & % new visitor down the city list,
looking for anomalies. If you're an ecommerce site, switching to the
'ecommerce' tab will also show you average value by city, and (i think)
revenue per visit, which again help you isolate if lots of traffic for a
particular city is *not* resulting in any sales at all, or very low
sales (often an indicator of bots). That also helps you see where
particular cities have abnormally high sales rates (often call
   centres/regional offices/etc).
   9. Switch to the content 'landing page' report, again with your 'direct
only' advanced segment applied. There, look for landing pages with
abnormally high bounce/% new visitor rates.
   10. Again in content reports, have a quick look for any pages with
   abnormally high 'entrance' rates.

Where you find anomalies, it's often worth drilling into them to see if
they are either A) one-off spikes, B) very flat 'too predictable' patterns
to be human, C) roughly normal. You can sometimes do that simply by
clicking into them, sometimes by using the 'filter' box at the top of the
table to (say) filter by the keyword 'southsea' so that you can then see
the graph of traffic just for that town.

Once you've gone through that, put together a simple plan for isolating
that traffic with Google Analytics filters.
Once you've applied your filters, your Google Analytics profiles themselves
will give you the information you're looking to buy from someone else for
free. (albeit with a bit of hard work up front to get there).

Hope that's useful,,

dan
