[uk-netmarketing] Email Marketing to an incomplete list

Its not unusual to just have email addresses in a list - e.g. to increase sign ups for a newsletter you can just ask for an email on the basis that each extra field will reduce conversion rates (i.e. why do you need to give a full name and extra details to get a simple newsletter?).

It also means, however, that while the users may have 'legally' consented to receive emails (from the Ts&Cs) that they may not have an 'expectation' that they will receive campaign emails. So the opt-out or spam responses could be high.

Also you can question of the client how long they have left it between gathering the consent and the email. If it has been a long time then the emails are more likely to bounce or be signalled as spam.

If its a simple newsletter sign up then the individuals may have given lots of
hotmail emails rather than work emails (if was a clear work purpose the converse may be true) - but work emails tend to 'go bad'
pretty quickly as people move jobs every 2-3 years. Hotmail/Yahoo!/Gmail addresses tend to persist longer but go unread or land in the spam filter. Emails sent to work email addresses tend to get higher spam complaints, even for the actual email the person opted into as the nuisance factor is higher.

My advice would be:

	* If you don't trust the client and understand how the client got the list then don't work with them
	* Ask the client how the email list was gathered and ensure the email has a prominent 'you have received this email because you subscribed to...' and have a very prominent opt out link
	* 500 emails is not a lot and unless they virtually all bounce or get reported as spam would be unlikely to affect a sender reputation unless there are spam traps among the email list, but why not test with sends 100 at a time and see the response

Subject: [uk-netmarketing] Email Marketing to an incomplete list

Hi Everyone,

I have had a request from one of my clients to send an emailer to a list of around 500 Brokers (property business) for whom we only have an email address.  There is no name, no company, nothing – only the email address.

I will not be using their usual ESP (Mail Chimp) to send this out as we will probably get shut down.  What other options could/should we consider (apart from sending out from Outlook in small batches over a period of days)?

I don't normally deal with this kind of request as it is spam,  but if you have any ideas as to how we could handle this I would appreciate very much your thoughts.

Many thanks.
