Cool - happy to chat any time.

For anyone else, I have experience of some of those outfits - lets just say there are some that i might work with and others that I would most definitely not. My main bits of advice if your considering using a service like this would be:

1) Take the initial meetings very seriously - your impression of the outfit is probably correct.
2) More expensive doesn’t necessarily equal a better fit for you. It might be that all you need is a steady stream of prospects and you do all the hard work to convert.
3) Make sure you don’t set the benchmark as being meetings booked - it’s easy to setup bullshit meetings or indeed pretend to setup meetings.
4) Make sure you know who you’re meeting and that they have confirmed their attendance to you.
5) If at-all possible vet the person who’s going to be making your calls and check what they are doing alongside yours. You don’t want someone that’s working 1 day a week for you and 4 days for a direct competitor.

Anyway… that’s it off the top of my head. Suffice to say we fell foul of all of the above and it nearly put us out of business so choose carefully and take it super-seriously.

My gut feeling is similar to yours, the event is pretty specialised and needs a relatively consultative sell, it's not a case of hammering the phone and flogging stands. There's an opportunity to get up-to-speed, but it'll be a case of moving quickly. So far, most of the people I've spoken to have loads of experience in selling to agencies/digital product-type folks, but that isn't the target market.

Be interesting to see how things pan out...

I think this might be a tricky one I’m afraid. Putting aside my reservations about these sales houses for a second the problem is that:

a) they’re only really motivated by retainer work - ironic really.
b) If they work for anyone they work for people who have a fairly broad offering. That way they can make as many calls as they like without too much fear of running out of prospects or cocking it up.

I ran into exactly this problem when I took on the BIMA awards a few years back and frankly my solution was to lean on relationships (mostly Justin Cook's) and cut the prices down to a level that they couldn’t really argue with. That meant less hard work for us trying to rope them in and better value for the sponsors - a win all round I thought (we also increased profit significantly over the previous year).

So… I’d suggest getting them to look at the budget and see if they can be creative with it. Also - worth looking at the proposition and think about where the value is - for example, there might be more value in doing a 3 min introduction to a session than in a 50ft high logo.
