The GSM initiative in Finland sounds interesting as does the e-charge system in the US. For further info, see www.e-charge.com or my cut and paste below.
Interestingly, Microsoft must like this option as it can be installed in the Microsoft wallet.
Must be a good one for the BT business model!
The eCHARGE Transaction System offers an alternative payment method to any Internet user by allowing the users to "charge" items to their local phone bill. The eCHARGE system extends "credit" to anyone who has a telephone and dials to the Internet. The eCHARGE Transaction System eliminates all complexity, privacy, and security barriers of shopping on the Internet today and facilitates instant fulfillment.
The eCHARGE Transaction System is more secure than using other Internet solutions. eCHARGE connects directly from your modem to a switch that automatically captures the billing information. There is no transfer of private data or account numbers over the Internet. eCHARGE provides a billing service that is familiar; it uses the same dial-up process as your Internet connection. The simple, point-and-click payment method allows quick decisions and instant fulfillment. eCHARGE provides an option to purchase services over the Internet for anyone who does not have or will not use a credit card You can purchase digital goods and services price as low as $1 and as high as $100.
