I think the whole of virgin.com was down over the new year weekend not just the
mobile phone site.
I suspect it was more to do with potential/apparent year 2000 rollover problems
than anything else.

It looks to me as if the whole of the Virgin Mobile setup has been rushed to get
the Christmas sales,
the service is abysmal - I am on hold now waiting to speak to someone about
replacing my second faulty
phone! Over the past two weeks I must have spent about 4 hours on hold trying
to talk to people in Virgin Mobile - at least they have stopped playing the
Christmas music now!
