1. Domain names are a way of your potential and existing customers to find
your website easily. Generic domain names are useful if you can
integrate them well into your brand and often work well with search
engines.

2. "Prestige" telephone numbers are first-come, first-served, and have
little relevance to your company's name and brand, unless you can get
hold of a number that translates well to letters for advertising.
In general, you don't try and guess a company's phone number if you
just know their name, though - you might use a directory, and there's
not many good, comprehensive AND not-full-of-rubbish directories for
websites.

3. Car registration numbers? Excuse me but isn't that just vanity?

PS. Yep, trading domain names IS the work of scum, no denying it. Whether
or not trading phone numbers and car reg. numbers is also the work of
scum, I don't know - I'm not in that industry.
