I've read business plans for californian startups that  have acquisition

by a threatened named monopolist (/market leader) as the explicit exit

strategy. it's legit. and not new at all

All I have noticed is an even larger shift towards this end - companies

'buying' bits (or wholes!) of others when they see a good product. Is it

legit? Yes. Is it healthy? Time will tell...
