While privatizing the BBC might be a good idea, opening it to commercial
forces isn't, so me thinks. Unfortunately commercial endeavours tend to
be dumbed down endeavours. Quality would disappear or only be available
for the extremely well off. Take schooling for instance. Most parents
wouldn't pay 10 to help their school, they don't value education
properly. If they were told they had to pay x rather than just having
it come out of taxes, most would lower the amount. The well off would
go to private schools (sound familiar) and those who couldn't afford it
would continue at declining schools. Too bad for the middle class and
poor who do value education, no way out.
Catering for the average punter will result in nothing but Sun look a
likes. Why don't we just shut down the entire educational system.
Let's have a nation-wide vote, as 50% (my guess) of the population don't
have children, a popular vote would probably pass it. Watch out folks,
those check out people are about to become even more intelligent, not.
Most people will make decisions based on short term objectives and
neglect the long term. How would society advance?
The BBC delivers what is considered some of the best quality work
available. 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it'. I for one am happy to
continue to pay license fees and a 30 fee for digital sounds reasonable
too. If people want to watch mindless dribble, they should be penalized
fo it, right?
