Why ever not? Newsgroups are open forums, and it can be particularly
damaging to a company's reputation if unchecked (and possibly untrue)
rumours propagate from such a source. After all, news concerning Intel's
floating point error started in newsgroups... and look what happened when
the news spread. They ended up spending millions repairing the damage.

Conversely, during March 1999, Pioneer tackled complaints about its DVD
players that had appeared on newsgroups by emailing the complainants and
offering to fix their faulty machines. This stopped negative coverage from
going any further.

What would you rather do... stick your corporate head in the sand and wait
for the mumbings to reach the mainstream press?
