Not strictly true. Although this is a popular theory among people who can't
do it or have been burned while paying somebody else to do it (badly).

It is entirely possible to "trick" search engines without touching the
actual content of your site. Whether that is ethical or whether the search
engines like it or not is a different subject.

There are numerous highly successful projects out there for major clients
utilising such "tricknology". It can work well and can yield higher levels
of better targetted site traffic than many other online marketing methods.

Specific, detailed experience and knowledge of search engine spidering and
ranking algorithms is required. Beyond this, it's spade work and coding.

There are even products and services which take most of the hard work out -
but they ain't cheap.

In general though, as Lee rightly pointed out, few companies can do it
successfully and even fewer can do it at low cost. Mainly because of the
hours and/or specific technology involved.
