Funnily enough I used to be a Buyer for JS at Stamford Street HQ. Whilst
encouraging extra margin for plinth promotions (the bit on the end of the
aisle) plus end of season stuff (for fruit etc) it was a straight wholesale
relationship. Of course, the wholesalers regarded the margins as punishing,
but it was still a deal in the sense that all wholesalers had the same
punishing margins....The analogy is more portals saying give us your goods
and if we sell any you'll get a payment i.e. the content provider takes on
more than 50% of the risk.

Er, sadly they do. If it does not materialise as shelving fees or extra
discounts or co-operative marketing, it appears as something else. This is
the power of the Mediator.
Anyone else remember the false dawn of disintermediation?
Steve.
