As somebody with no vested interest either way, I found the meta-story
'bollocks'. It's not news - remember Barbi Benton, the mid-70s Playboy
bunny? It's not a particularly interesting story - it would have been
better to run a humour piece on the amusing names of real-life porn stars,
if you're going to do something about sex. It doesn't say anything - if
kids are looking for porn, they'll type 'Kari Wuhrer nude', not 'I love
Santa'.
Heck, kids don't love Santa. They love Pikachu.
It's the kind of thing people use to fill their news pages when there
isn't any real news. And it's basically an advert for the company
mentioned in the text. That's the 'bollocks'.
Let's do an experiment, anyway.
http://www.google.com/ - the only search engine that matters. 'I love
santa'. First page, lots of stuff about Santa. And Santa Barbara. Second
page, same as the first. Third page, stuff about Santa Clara. 'Barbie',
first page, stuff about Barbie, the doll. 'Pokemon', first page, stuff
about Pokemon. 'Robot dog', first page, stuff about the Aibo. And Sega's
utterly useles 'Poo-chi'. I could go on but I have to identify pictures of
Vespas.
As for other outlets being taken in, since when did blanket coverage in
the media make something valid?
