thanks for the advice everyone. i know i have to find an employer who wants
me over there. i guess i'd love to apply what i've learned here to a market
that i would enjoy working in. so if anyone is looking for a senior
producer/project manager with beaucoup marketing experience, shout over
here. :)
as for volunteers, that's an interesting concept. don't think my mom would
approve. but i'd have to see who is doing the volunteering. ;)
cheers all!

Hi
You really need to find an employer before you arrive. The employer
then applies for a work permit on your behalf. We recruited a couple
of people recently (one from Nigeria, one from China) and it was
surprisingly quick and easy.
The Overseas Labour Service complained a little about the lack of
experience of the people (both had MSc, one also had an MBA, but
neither had much work experience) but let them in anyway. Your
experience should be okay but your area may not be defined as a
'shortage occupation' which our people, Java programmers, are.
There are new rules coming in which will make it easier to come and
work here - less experience required, longer period of stay permitted,
and shortage occupations defined by the market rather than by
arbitrary Home Office ruling.
A UK work permit won't let you work freely across Europe [nor will a
Dutch one], so if you prefer the Netherlands, get a job there instead!
Also, it might be hard to switch jobs once you're here. But it's
worth it...I think. The new media industry here is much more honest
and down-to-earth than in New York. Only you can decide if that's an
advantage :)
Of course there's always the old backup of marrying someone. I'm sure
we can get some volunteers on this list.
Leigh.
