Terry,
Hope this is useful and please bear in mind the advice is not complete. I
can't give away all our secrets! After all it's our business.
You don't need any money, or much time to submit your site to the search
engines. First of all, don't worry about all the 'cowboys' who claim to
submit your site to 10,000 search engines - most of them are going to be
non-traffic generating and half of them are probably FFA link pages which
will just fill your email up with useless spam.
You just need to concern yourself with the main search engines. Here's a
list of them with their submission page url's:
Lycos - http://www.lycos.com/addasite.html
Alta Vista - http://www.altavista.com/cgi-bin/query?pg=addurl
Google - http://www.google.com/addurl.html
Excite - http://www.excite.com/info/add_url_form
Magellan - http://magellan.excite.com/info/add_url
Webcrawler - http://www.webcrawler.com/info/add_url/
Northern Light - http://www.northernlight.com/docs/regurl_help.html
MSN - http://search.msn.com/addurl.asp
Direct Hit - http://www.directhit.com/util/addurl.html
Infoseek - http://www.go.com/AddUrl?pg=SubmitUrl.html&svx=CTOC_Add_url
Canada - http://www.canada.com/search/web/addurl.asp - Feeds into Inktomi.
FAST - http://www.ussc.alltheweb.com/add_url.php3
Hotbot - http://hotbot.lycos.com/addurl.asp
Anzwers - http://www.anzwers.com.au/cgi-bin/print_addurl.pl - Feeds into
Inktomi.
These are all the major's taken care of. To get into the UK search
engines, just go to the UK equivalents of AltaVista, MSN, Lycos, Voila and
Excite. Check these url's for any extra's you'd like to get into;
www.searchenginecolossus.com/ - Search engines listed by Country.
www.searchengineguide.com/ - A search engine of search engines and
directories.
www.searchpower.com/ - The 'Largest' list of search engines and directories.
For safety's sake, submit around 4 or 5 pages to all these search engines
over the period of about a month and then wait another month or two to see
how your doing. Wherever you're not in, resubmit. Regarding software, I
highly recommend submitting everything by hand - Northern Light banned all
Web Position Gold submissions for blocking them up - now Web Position Gold
don't report on them because they're 'no longer a major search engine' -
strange that!
I do use Web Position Gold for reporting though. It saves a lot of time
rather than typing each keyword into each search engine and seeing how
you're doing.
Directories are a different matter. These submissions take time and you
should take extra care to submit accurate information. Don't submit a site
unless it is 'finished', e.g. shouldn't have 'under construction' pages,
broken links, spam, etc.
Directories don't like sites with loads of Doorway Pages with them either so
get rid of them. Don't even think about Doorways until you've done your
keyword research (use GoTo suggestion tool, competitor sites, etc), meta tag
copywriting, rewritten body copy to incorporate keywords and general HTML
optimising.
Here at DVisions we have a 'Getting Into Yahoo!' advice document which I can
email anyone (for FREE) if they would like it. Once you can get into Yahoo!
you can get in anywhere.
Good luck.
