What alternative are you after, Ray? Every alternative to DNS
proposed has usually been controlled by, at best, an oligarchy of
companies who would gladly rip you off as badly as NSI and the
registrars, with the added bonus of an even *less* stable
infrastructure to hang it all off.

The best solution, it seems to me, is opening up the registrar
market, and allowing a free market in top-level domains, as
proposed by Karl Auerbach. That way, you'll get price
competition in the TLD market, and the entirely artificial
trademark controversy (created by the spurious perception
of scarcity in the DNS namespace) will dissappear of its own accord.
