This 'digital watermark' idea was running in Wired (the mag) a few months

ago. Technology is interesting but who really wants to jump to a website by

hooking up a web cam, installing the software, getting your copy of Wired

(or coffee cup) and eventually, after all this trouble, going to a website

you could have got to a couple of hours before by typing in a simple URL!


I can see the applications in a 3G/Bluetooth world where you can use you

mobile phone/pda with digital camera capability to scan the page but a

couple of years off (and by the time we do need it OCR tech will probably be

able to read the URL directly off the page.)


Check out the 'cue cat' as well (again running in Wired) for a more

traditional bar code approach to the same idea (http://www.cuecat.com/) -

with this idea you actually get sent a cat shaped barcode scanner. Yes,

that's right, a cat shaped barcode scanner. They've actually sent out tens

of thousands to Wired subscribers. Where the business model in this is i'm

not sure.
