I wont comment on the latter but I will add a perspective to the
debate.

At Brand New Media we have a strong bias towards fmcg clients (Heinz,
Procter and Gamble, KP Foods, Bass, Barr Soft Drinks, Calypso etc).
Whilst you can debate the merits of consumer orientated sites that
have been produced by BNM and other agencies the more interesting
angle is in the business to business arena.

A significant proportion of the work we are undertaking in fmcg is
not in the public domain - it involves intranet and extranet
applications in the UK and europe/US that add value to the
communications and knowledge sharing between product categories. In
this respect the fmcg industry faces similar problems to other
sectors and therefore has strong reasons for spending significant
budgets in these areas.

The consumer fmcg sites we have produced generally speaking have
been the result of satisfying a need - others have been brand
experiences that add to the marketing mix.
