The BBC 'something' is a piece of Software endearingly titled BETSIE (BBC
Education Text to Speech Internet Enhancer). Basically it re-orders the
text on a page and strips out the formatting, delivering the page in an easy
to read large text format. Pages delivered by BETSIE are also easy to read
for screen readers, as everything runs left to right, whereas many web pages
that are in columns or heavily formatted sound like gobbledygook when screen
reading software is used. The code is available free for those who want to
make their sites accesible via BETSIE.
