Reminds me of a conversation I had with the senior sales manager at a

directory run by a rather well known telco (I'd dared to ask the junior

sales person questions about numbers of visitors) which went something like

this:


Them: "We get 2 million impressions per month, and have 20,000 categories."


Me: "Great, so how many people will see my category?"


Them: "Well, assume 1% will see your category, and assume that 20% of those

want to buy your services, that's 4000 new enquiries every month, for only

500 quid."


Me: "Er, right. So how many people come through the service?"


Them: "We don't actually log the usage of the site because that would slow

it down y'see. We'd rather our web servers were serving customers than

wasting their time logging statistics."


Me: "Um, so you don't think it is important to an advertiser to actually

know how many people are seeing the advert?"


Them: "Well even if it is only half that, that's still 2,000 new enquiries

per month."


Me: "But surely out of 20,000 categories less than 1% will come to mine?"


Them: "No, you can discount most of the categories - they're all obscure

things."


Me: "So do you have any stats to back up this claim?"


Them: "We can negotiate on price."


Me: "I'd rather give it a miss, thanks."


Them: "I'll fax you a quote and call you in a week."

P.S - Our record for Internet Money was four calls in one day, two from the

same caller!
